I saw Jackie out of the corner of my eye, but I was so fixated on Claire that I didn’t notice she’d left until I reached Claire and realized we were alone. I’d been looking for her everywhere. I’d already been out here twice. I was about to call my car and head to her apartment. Fortunately, Jameson had developed the disgusting habit of smoking Gurkha cigars and happened to see Claire out here.

Two minutes later, I was face to face with her.

“Claire, what the hell is going on?” I asked. “How do you know Jackie Wray?”

“How do you know Jackie Wray?” she countered, crossing her arms over her chest. “Actually, you don’t need to answer that because I already know. You slept with her.”

“Yeah, two months ago,” I said. “Who fucking cares?”

Claire’s eyes narrowed. “She fucking cared, Griff. Why do you think she came?”

It beat the hell out of me. I’d thought Jackie and I were both on the same page when it came to our relationship. We didn’t have one. We called each other up when we thought we might be in the same town. I had Mrs. Edwards send flowers on her birthday, same as I did every regular hook up. And maybe I’d mentioned the charity golf tournament, even idly suggested she stop by if she happened to be in town. But I hadn’t meant it.

I tried to explain this to Claire, but her expression became grimmer and grimmer. When I was done, she said in a voice that was half sarcastic, half disgusted. “So let me get this straight. You slept with her on a regular basis, sent her flowers on her birthday, and invited her to the golf tournament. And you have no idea why she thought you two might be more than a casual hook up?”

“No one else has ever assumed that meant we were in a relationship!” I exclaimed. I realized instantly that it had been the single worst thing I could have said.

“Did you know that there’s a horde of women in the ladies room gossiping about you right now?” Claire threw her arm out, pointing in what I presumed to be the direction of the bathroom.

Shit. I hadn’t known exactly, but it didn’t surprise me. We lived in an insular world. It wasn’t that I meant to sleep with women who knew each other, but it was inevitable.

I opened my mouth, but she wasn’t done.

“And do you know how stupid I felt in there, listening to them joke about what a man whore you are?”

“Why would you--”

“Because someone else has made the mistake of thinking they meant more to you than they do,” she shoved both hands hard into my chest.

“I can’t help it if those women--”

“I’m not talking about those women,” Claire flared. “I’m talking about me, you idiot!”

Claire’s green eyes were glittering with hurt and anger, but there was an opening in what she’d just said. I just had to say the right thing back. I was still trying to figure out what the hell she meant though.
